Though the full suite must be purchased, Foxit offers a number of annotation and highlighting tools for free.For most people in university and college, the ability to annotate PDF files is one of the main reasons for buying an iPad.
There are hundreds of apps out there that let you annotate PDFs: how do you know which one is the best one for you? Rather than discussing one particular app in detail, this post presents the bigger picture by discussing three different user profiles whose needs are different with regards to PDF annotation and management.
Once you know what type of user you are, you can check out the overview of 10 plus 3 appsmy personal favorites, and some thoughts on using a stylus. What works for you can be a nightmare for your colleague. You might fall in between two of these profiles. In this case, you can either decide what requirement is more important for your individual workflow, or you can use two apps for different workflows and different tasks. For example, I am currently using Sente to annotate journal articles and iAnnotate to annotate PDF files for committee work.
The only downturn is that the free version of pdf-notes displays advertisements, which you can get rid of by buying the paid version.
Adobe Reader does not display ads. In general these apps come pretty close to the apps listed in the second category, so you might want to check out these free options before you are investing money on paid All-Around Reader apps. If your PDF reading workflow has one of the two following requirements, your annotating needs are best served by apps for the all-around reader. If you value flexibility, then the apps in this category are a good fit for you, because you will be able to view annotations you made on the iPad in every other standard PDF viewer on the Mac e.
Another reason why you need an app for the All-Around Reader is that you want to or need to make annotations in a free-drawing mode. Another reason might be that you want to make handwritten annotations in the margins of the PDF; however, I am not convinced that this is a good way to annotate PDFs see below.
If, however, it is important for you to have your PDF not just lying around in folders but organized in a library, you probably will be more happy with an app targeted for the third user profile. This user profile is for the geeks. While the apps mentioned for the first and second user profile started out as apps to read and annotate PDF files, the apps in this category started out as reference management apps on the Mac and later added companion apps for the iPad that let you annotate PDF files.
This user profile is the best fit for you when you want to have a tightly integrated ecosystem that allows you to find, manage, read, annotate, and cite your PDFs in your academic workflow.
Typically, you would also own the Mac or Windows companion app that serves as your main tool to curate your library, to insert in-text citations in your write-ups, and to create bibliographies at the end of your paper.
While the iPad apps in this category also allow you to add and manage papers, they lack the powerful citation functions of their respective Mac versions. However, they are great tools to access your library on the go, and it is much more convenient to read and annotate PDF files on the couch with your iPad than at the desk with your Mac. The biggest benefit of this tight integration is that you can view and edit your highlights and notes regardless of whether you are working with you iPad or with your Mac.
Also, storing your PDFs in a library vs. You can assign one PDF file to multiple collections and you can add keywords, tags, status, and rankings to your PDFs. In my opinion, if you annotate PDF files as part of your research workflow maybe you even have some annotation strategiesthen PDF management apps are a very good investment for you.

I'm an English teacher, and anything that helps to promote literacy and exposure to new and interesting texts gets an A in my book. These texts can be downloaded and are aimed at varying literacy levels. The topics are broad and can be used to promote critical thinking. In an ELT context they could be used to form the basis of discussions. The text worksheets also contain questions to encourage reflection and debate.
I actually teach a Journalism course. I love the idea of Storify to teach the kids about various forms of media, creating a story using a unified idea, and finding reliable sources. Storify is a wonderful tool for teaching. I've found Zotero very helpful as I've conducted my own research. It's difficult for my students to stay organized sometimes with physical things--this application keeps everything neat and can teach about citation as well. Knowledge is only as useful as it is accessible. Zotero provides an excellent management tool that allows users to carry their research across topics and domains with ease. I love Zotero! A tip: Zotero works best with Firefox.
When you use Chrome, you can't save a file directly to the database. I recently piped my Amazon Kindle catalog to Zotero, and am currently bulk-importing my YouTube history. There're so many cool projects you can undertake with CHNM's highly-extensible application.

In this post I included a few screenshots of my iPad with annotation to explain the steps of how to bookmark a website on your iPad. Using the annotation tool on your iPad can be very useful when showing students how to accomplish a task. You might also want your students to annotate images on their iPad to demonstrate their understanding or explain their thinking.
The steps below outline how you can annotate a screenshot or any image on your iPad. First, open up the image you would like to annotate in the Photos app on your iPad. You can annotate the screen using your finger or a stylus like this one or this one. This lets you decide if you want your drawing to be more crisp.
In the image above I chose to make my arrow look more crisp. Then I used the other options at the bottom righthand corner of the screen to change the color of my arrow to orange and make the line thicker.
The option to add text is on the bottom lefthand corner. Once you add text to your screen you can use the options shown above to customize the font, size and alignment. Just like the drawing tool, you can also change the color of the text. Depending on the type of image you annotate.
The magnifying tool on the bottom lefthand corner might come in handy. You can see the magnifying circle hovering over the stem of the apple in the picture above.
